Hello Everyone! It looks like perhaps Spring is finally here! Students are shedding their coats, running and playing with glee out in the yard! Keep the sun shining!

A few updates to share!

PA Day! Tomorrow, Friday April 24! - NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS!

Sports

We have a few sports running at the moment! Our Intermediate Flag Rugby Team is up and running! We haven’t had one in a while, so the excitement is showing!

Junior Boys Basketball is on the go right now! They are having a blast and “shooting” for the stars!

Junior Girls Basketball is going strong too! The girls are working hard and showing that Blackbird spirit!

Intermediate Co-Ed Volleyball is just starting up too! Looking forward to watching this team do their thing!

Clubs

Clubs are going strong! Chess Club was a huge success! Lego Club! Board Games! We have a new Bird Watcher’s Club! Law Club is starting next week as well! Equity Club! And many more! Students are engaged and excited about new things!

YouthLEADArts Program

Our Grade 6, 7, 8 students have spent the past 2 weeks participating in an exciting opportunity called the youthLEADarts program, a five-day, full-day immersive arts experience that focused on creativity, leadership, and personal growth. The program combined photography, visual art, drama, and writing to help students explore the themes of identity, community, and personal journeys while building communication, life, and employment skills.

Throughout the week, students explored the LEAD values: Listen, Empathize, Act, and Drive, while learning artistic techniques and reflecting on their role within their community.

During the program students learned photography and storytelling techniques through exploring Indigenous perspectives, including the Seven Grandfather Teachings, participating in creative writing, drama, and voice work, creating self-portraits and photo stories, reflect on community, place, and identity, and working collaboratively with professional artists and facilitators. Students also participated in a community walk using Barrie Transit to explore downtown and capture photographs that tell stories about community and place. We are grateful, proud and appreciative of the grant money that allowed us to participate, as well as having Laurie and Shelley here with us to lead us in this amazing program!

Class Building for Next Year

As we begin staffing and preparing for next year, we will soon be starting the process of building classes. Staffing is tentative at the moment, and will not be confirmed until August. If you have a class placement request for next year please email Mrs. Kenny ([email protected]). We cannot guarantee your request to be granted, but we welcome the input very much in creating classes for next year. We are also not able to indicate which teachers have been assigned to which grade, however if you have requests or information about preferred class placements for September please reach out.

50th Anniversary

We are slowly working on celebrating our 50th Anniversary! Stay tuned for information. We will most likely do a group celebration in the fall, but we will be honouring our 50th Grade 8 Graduating Class this year and we will be doing an Aerial Photo sometime in May or June! We will send out more information!

If you have any information or know any former Assikinack alumni, please feel free to email us to share any artifacts, articles, photos, etc!
